When to Hire an Interior Designer for Your Renovation (And Why Timing Matters)

Not long ago, I walked into a stunning new kitchen here on the Seacoast of New Hampshire with gleaming marble counters, custom cabinetry, and beautiful light. But within minutes, the homeowners were sharing their frustration: it was a tight squeeze to open the oven door because of where the island had been placed.

It was a small detail with a big impact, and one that could have been avoided with design insight a little earlier in the process.

Lately, several of my clients have told me the same thing in different ways:

“I wish we had brought you in sooner.”
or
“I didn’t realize you could help with this part of the project.”

And that’s when it hit me…many homeowners assume they should bring in an interior designer toward the end of a project, once construction is underway or nearly complete. But in reality, for large-scale renovations (especially kitchens and bathrooms), and custom homes, some of the most important decisions happen much earlier in the process.

When those early opportunities are missed, it can lead to limitations, added costs, and a lot of “if only we had known” moments.

So, When Should you Hire an Interior Designer?

What I’ve learned over 20+ years designing homes is that, whether you’re planning a renovation or building a new home, the best time to hire an interior designer is at the very beginning, before plans are finalized and long before construction starts.

At Mandeville Canyon Design, we do so much more than select furniture and finishes. We look at your home as a whole and ensure that all the elements are thought through and in place before construction starts. We collaborate with your architect and builder to ensure every decision supports how you want to live in your home.

This includes:

  • Space planning and layout flow
  • Kitchen and bathroom design
  • Lighting and electrical plans
  • Built-ins and millwork
  • Material selections across the entire home

Imagine finishing a beautiful new home only to realize the layout feels awkward, or learning too late that your lighting plan limits your design options. These foundational choices are always easier (and more cost-effective) to get right from the start.

What I’m Seeing Firsthand as a Full-Service Interior Designer

In several recent New Hampshire design projects, clients brought me in after plans were complete or construction had already begun, thinking their timing was perfect. But as soon as we started reviewing their homes together and discussing interior design elements, constraints surfaced.

Not mistakes, just missed opportunities.

Moments where a small shift earlier in the process could have made a meaningful difference in both function and overall design.

Common Renovation Challenges (and How to Avoid Them)

Here are a few real scenarios that I’ve either experienced myself or heard from other designers:

  • A kitchen that looks beautiful but doesn’t function as well as it could: Cabinetry had already been ordered, limiting our ability to improve the layout for better flow and everyday use.
  • Lighting plans set too early: Electrical placement was already set, meaning we had to design around it instead of creating a layered, intentional lighting plan.
  • Missed opportunities for built-ins and storage: Once framing is complete, adding custom elements becomes significantly more expensive or no longer possible.
  • Selections made without a cohesive vision (this one is SO common, yet easy to avoid): Materials had been chosen individually, making it more challenging to create a seamless, elevated look throughout the home.

In nearly every case, the clients and contractors had great intentions, they just didn’t realize how valuable early collaboration with a designer could be.

Why Early Interior Design Planning Matters for Renovations

Some clients worry that bringing in a designer early will add cost or another layer to the process. In reality, it streamlines everything. Early involvement adds clarity, direction, and confidence, often saving time, money, and stress.

When we join your team from day one, our role is to help:

  • Prevent costly changes during construction
  • Ensure layouts reflect your lifestyle and everyday routines
  • Align design decisions between you, your builder and architect
  • Create a cohesive, whole-home design that flows beautifully
  • Simplify decision-making with clear, guided choices

It’s a more thoughtful, strategic way to approach your home and it ultimately protects your investment.

Designing for Your Lifestyle in Seacoast New Hampshire

Whether you’re building in Portsmouth, renovating in Exeter, or updating a home in North Hampton, every project is deeply personal.

As an interior designer serving the New Hampshire Seacoast, my role is to design a home that not only looks beautiful but truly supports how you live. That means understanding your routines, priorities, and long-term goals from the very beginning.

A More Seamless, Enjoyable Process

One of the biggest differences, and dare I say benefits, I see when clients bring us in early?

The entire process feels more organized and far less overwhelming.

Instead of reacting to changes or working around limitations, we work from a clear plan. Everyone is aligned, communication flows easily, and your home comes together with purpose and ease.

That’s truly what design leadership delivers: confidence, cohesion, and calm.

So… When Should You Reach Out?

If you’re even thinking about a renovation or new build, gathering inspiration, meeting with a builder, or still sketching ideas, that’s the right time to connect. You don’t need finalized plans or every detail figured out. In fact, this is where a designer can add the most value. Early collaboration ensures every choice, from layouts to lighting to finishes, supports the way you want to live.

Bringing a designer in early doesn’t complicate your project, it simplifies it. It gives you a clear roadmap, keeps decisions aligned, and prevents those “wish we’d known” moments later on.

Final Thoughts

If there’s one thing I hope you take away from this, it’s this:

You don’t have to wait.

In fact, the earlier we begin working together, the more opportunity there is to create a home that’s deeply personal and feels cohesive, functional, and truly tailored to you.

If you’re planning a renovation or new build and are looking for a Seacoast New Hampshire interior designer, I’d love to connect and help guide your project from the very beginning.

Let’s design your home, intentionally, from the start.

Renee was a pleasure to work with and has great vision. We were doing a total rehab of a recently purchased property and she was able to look at a gutted out '50s cottage and turn it into a beautiful mid-century modern home. She understood our budget and timeline and was good about narrowing all our options down to just a few choices. This expedited the process, made it less difficult and more enjoyable. Once the rehab is done, we look forward to working with her again and finish the rest of the rooms.

Renee not only has an amazingly creative eye, she also directed a massive renovation for us this past year that included the challenges of operating during the pandemic. She put together a team that had an incredible work ethic and brought the project in on-time and on-budget. She's a great listener. When we threw ideas at her, she was never dismissive; quite the contrary, she made them better. Her patience, attention to detail combined with her whacky sense of humor meant we were all able to smile while producing a home that we love. A great talent and a great lady.
